Artist Spotlight - Chris Rehrl of inkminipainting

Writer's picture: plasticpreacherplasticpreacher

Good morning, afternoon, evening or perhaps all three. Today we've got another entry into our artist spotlight series; this time courtesy of Chris from @inkminipainting. I came across Chris because he actually reached out to me and told me what he'd like to see more of with the blog, so I figured he deserved a spotlight for his initiative and help. It then also helped that he has been working on a really cool army, so let's all just be quiet for a few minutes, and see what we can learn from Chris! As with most people I feature, I haven't changed any of their grammar or spellings s to not take away from the authenticity of their perspectives!

- How, why and when did you start painting?

First time I got introduced to Warhammer was with the LotR Magazine, #1 which included tiny Moria Goblins, think i was around 10yrs, some School Friends and me then painted some Minis, never really played only painted (this hasn't changed, im still only interested in the painting side of the hobby) but that got boring quickly and i stopped after couple of Magazine Issues. Couple Years later i got introduced to Warhammer 40k by my Cousin who painted up some Black Templars, but i never got into the Hobby at that Time. But for some Reason i kept checking the GW Website every couple Years or so, to have a look at what new Models came out and the Paintjobs.

Also played the Space Marine Videogame, talking about Videogames, after multiple Years of being heavy into Gaming i was getting bored of it and wanted to get into a new Hobby. Then i stumbled across a Squidmar Video on YT in September 2022 and straight away knew i will give it a go! Ordered some Space Marine Intercessors, couple of Paints and here i am now, getting interviewed by You. Thanks again for this great Opportunity by the Way!

- What do you love and hate about painting?

I honestly like everything about it, constantly learning new Stuff and improving myself. What i love the most is that you can be so creative about everything! Paint however you want it, create your own Chapter or best example in my opinion would be kitbashing. Build your own version of a Mini and make it look unique. Do i "hate" anything? No, i wouldnt say so.

- Favourite project you've worked on?

Has to be the Repulsor Executioner so far, because of the sheer amount of what ive learned during it. It was my first Tank ive ever painted, first time i used Enamel Products and loads more. Im really proud how it turned out!

- Future project you're planning or working on?

Start with the most obvious first? Thats adding more Minis to my Austrian Army, slowly filling up my Display Cabinet, i also want to change their Aesthetic a bit more to the Militaryside meaning no more Purity Seals, Charms and such instead add much more Tactical Gear and Pouches.

Besides my Space Marine Army Project i want to reach out to other Miniatures like AoS or maybe even some Busts to change it up a bit, preventing me of getting bored painting Space Marines only so far. I also want to put some Models on Display Plinths and improve my Skills to enter more Instagram/Online Competitions and ultimately Golden Demon at some Point. Soo yeah... i have loads of Ideas and Stuff to learn for the Future! And i am defo looking foward to that!

- Tell me about your Austrian Army Project?

First i have to say, since i got into the Hobby i always wanted to have my own custom Chapter and after a couple scrapped Ideas i came across Mightybrush and Golgoth_17 on Instagram, seeing the Raptors they painted i really loved the Idea of a more modern Warefare Look. I checked out the Website of Mightybrush and saw that he had a free Tutorial on "How to paint Raptors". I followed that, tweaked it a little bit to my liking and thats where it all started. But with no Raptors Decals i thought i go with the Austrian Army Logo since its a fairly simple one to paint. All i do is place a Crimson Fists Decal fill out the Red Circle after that mask off the Triangle, paint it white and done!

So initialy i started my Austrian Army as an Armies on Parade 2023 Project. The Idea behind that was to improve my Skills and have something to work towards the Year and as a Goal go to the closest GW Store near me. Sadly the Store Event got delayed by a whole Week and i couldnt participate anymore due to private Stuff.

Now after the Armies on Parade 2023 is over i definitely will not stop with this Project as i still enjoy it alot and as mentioned before continue adding to the Army and keep tweaking small things.

Well a big thanks to Chris for his time in writing a little piece up for us all. I love making these artist spotlights, as it allows a personal and unique insight into this hobby we all share, and that's what keeps things fresh, interesting and inspirational for the rest of us. Chris' Austrian Space Marine army is really cool, with the colours looking so very natural across the sculpts. Let's have a little look at a bit more of his wonderful artwork and army project.

As you can see from this small selection, this is a really cool looking army, painted very well and hosting a really nice original idea. I'm supposed more people don't make concept armies based on real world armies and colour schemes. I just think that lovely shade of green looks fantastic over the space marines, and is far more pleasurable on the eyes than that poster boy blue.

I can only recommend you go and check out Chris' page over at @inkminipainting to see more of his Austrian Space Marine army in more detail, as these articles can never truly do the artist justice! You should treat them as a little helpful snapshot, and go and make the small effort to have a look at some beautiful artwork yourself! I hope you enjoyed reading this insight into another artist and their artwork. I certainly enjoyed putting it together, and I think even Chris enjoyed writing it. So that just leaves the enjoyment for you to get from reading it and checking out his work! Thanks again for reading, and to Chris for his time and effort!

If you've got an army or concept you'd love to talk about and show off, then we'd love to have you here. You don't need to be a certain calibre of person to have a spotlight article written about you, these are here to soak up the individuality and uniqueness of our hobby, as well as drool over beautiful miniature art! Thank you!
